ISU is the founding member of the Association of Chinese and Mongolian Schools (ACAMIS). ISU participates in the following ACAMIS Sports events – volleyball, basketball, soccer.

An athletic league has been formed recently among the international schools in Ulaanbaatar. The Mongolian International School Sports League (MISSL) is comprised of the International School of Ulaanbaatar, the Elite International School, the Hobby School, and the American School of Ulaanbaatar (ASU).

Volleyball

Boys’ Volleyball team and their coach, Mr. Durant.

The ACAMIS Volleyball tournament is Beijing (October 2011) has been a great experience for our boy’s team. For the third consecutive year the Golden Eagles won first place. This year, the team remained undefeated and conceded only three sets throughout the competition. Three of our boys were selected in the tournament’s “dream team” and the ISU boys came second for sportsmanship award. It has been a pleasure to coach the team and to travel with the players. I am very proud our team. GOOOO EAGLES!

Philippe Durant, Boys Volleyball coach.

Girls’ Volleyball team and their coach, Ms. Idiens.

After two months of waking up at 5am and staying late in the evening, of tiring practices where the ISU Girl’s Volleyball Team pushed their bodies and abilities to the max, ACAMIS finally arrived last week. The tournament that the team thought and dreamt about daily, quickly became an exciting reality as we stepped foot on the BCIS court in full ISU gear ready to proudly represent our school.
The girls fought through each set in the tournament with heart and determination. They strongly communicated as a team and played proper three hit volleyball challenging each team to step up their game. They met some equally determined opponents and never gave up. With many impressive serves, consistent digging, strong teamwork and decorated with a variety of beautifully coloured bruises the ISU girls proudly were awarded third place overall. They were also recognized as second place for their sportswoman ship behavior.
I want to thank all of the girls for their dedication and commitment to the team. It has been a highlight of the school year and I encourage each and every one of you to keep pursuing your dreams. Face your fears and fight to get what you want from life. I wish you all courage, good health and happiness!
Many thanks!

Kristen Idiens, Girls Volleyball Coach.

 Basketball

The ACAMIS Basketball Tournament (February 2012) for our Blue Division was hosted this year by the Dulwich College Suzhou, China. Five schools attended for the boys; six for the girls. It was a very successful event and a great opportunity for all the young, talented students to show their skills and teamwork.

After our great success in volleyball this year, our basketball teams are taking over.

ISU Basketball teams experienced a very exciting and exceptional season this year. Mr. Mewbourn and his boys succeeded in taking the first place in our Division after some extremely challenging games. The level of the games was intense and on some occasions it was difficult to tell what would be the outcome until the last shots.

The girls also had a remarkable record. We had the pleasure to host several games during their preparation where they won every single game against some highly reputed teams here in UB, namely the Mongolian Sports School and the Russian School. On two occasions in the pre-season, we won against the American School of Ulaanbaatar (ASU), the team which actually took the first place in the ACAMIS Basket Tournament for the Blue Division. Please note that our girls’ team was one of the rare teams to be able to beat ASU during the ACAMIS Tournament.

The most challenging factor that we faced {especially for the girls} was the cold. People can smile when hearing this as we live in one of the coldest place in the world but, here at ISU, we are accustomed to playing in a heated gym! In that part of China, no gym is heated. In addition, it is traditional for the Chinese to leave windows and other accesses opened. It was hard for me to see their performance affected and them not able to play at their peak. Swollen arms, freezing fingers and headaches really disarmed them. Despite of all this we are glad that our teams gave the best of themselves and they never gave up.
