Middle Years Programme

All students from grade 6 to 10 follow the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) which is an international programme designed to give students the knowledge, values, attitudes and skills needed to be successful in today’s world.

The curriculum is made up of eight subject areas with the Areas of Interaction (AOI) at the core (see model below). Students study each of the eight subject groups through the AOI which are:

  • Approaches to learning (learning how we learn best)
  • Human ingenuity (the creativity of people and the effects on our society)
  • Health and social (staying healthy and our relationships with others)
  • Community and service (communities and our role in them)
  • Environments (how we interact with the world at large and the parts we play in our environments).

How are students assessed?

Students are assessed throughout the year using criteria which are specific to each subject. This means that students’ results are determined by performance against set standards, not by each student’s position in the overall rank order. A variety of assessment methods are used and are designed to cover the range of learning styles amongst our students and the needs of the subject. At ISU students may be assessed through the following methods:

  • Open-ended, problem-solving activities and investigations
  • Organized debates
  • Hands-on experimentation
  • Analysis
  • Reflection.

The assessment process in MYP also offers feedback on the process as well as the finished assignment and there is also a strong emphasis on self-reflection.
